HALUK ÖZDALGA: A hyperbolic tale of the sabotage – US wanted save the Nord Stream!

21.08.2024

The concise X (twitter) message by the Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk demonstrates that the developments in the wake of the Nord Stream sabotage have reached a new phase, containing some tragicomic elements.

“For everyone who initiated and patronized Nord Stream 1 and 2. All you have to do today is apologize and stay silent.”

The primary addressee of the message is Germany. The Polish Prime Minister, while once again reprimanding Germany, puts forth his main demand: Don’t talk anymore about Nord Stream and close the file.

Washington warned many times not to build lines carrying Russian gas, but Germany went ahead with it anyway. President Joe Biden and Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland announced in clear terms that they would destroy Nord Stream if Russia starts an invasion. Later, America simply did what it promised, and corrected Germany’s “mistake” with the method it knew best.

According to Prof. Jeffrey Sachs, “America always does this kind of things.”

The gas lines were destroyed in September 2022 through the operation planned by CIA in cooperation with Norwegian intelligence, under the instructions of President Biden. Thanks to the investigative journalist Seymour Hersh, we know the details well. It became the biggest act of economic terrorism against industrial facilities in Europe.

Poland is today the number one ally of the Biden administration in Continental Europe, and Prime Minister Tusk is one of the most-loved European leaders in Washington. On the other hand, there is distrust and friction between Poland and Germany arising from historical reasons.

Now we have arrived at the third phase of the post-sabotage period.

– In the first phase, the CIA in cooperation with some some European intelligence organizations contributed to the news that the most likely suspect was Russia. Russian ships were roaming in the area just before the explosion, etc. But the valves at the very upstream were under Russian control, and they could turn them off and on as they pleased; why would Russia take the trouble of deep-sea sabotage? The disinformation would make even crows laugh and it did not catch on.

– In the second phase, the same sources disseminated the news through the Wall Street Journal as well as many of the major European media that “four Ukrainian professional divers planted the bombs.” As experts agree, such a technically complex terrorist act can only be committed by states. A tale was fabricated that the divers were first supported by the Ukrainian state, and then, after the CIA discovered the plot and warned Kiev, President Zelensky withdrew its support but was unable to stop its execution.

For this tale to be true, first of all, Washington should NOT have desired those gas lines to be destroyed. The world knows they have disclosed countless times what they wished. However, the WSJ reporting purports that the US wanted save the Nord Stream!

There are other murky aspects of the new and hyperbolic version.

There is heavy maritime traffic in the Baltic Sea and many Russian ships cruise around. Diving and placing bombs in at least three different locations at a depth of about 90 meters is not a task that can be completed in a few hours. It’s almost impossible to do it without being seen. The CIA accomplished this difficult task by programming an announced diving operation during NATO’s planned exercise BALTOPS 22, in which many military ships and vehicles, including the 6th Fleet, participated. How did Ukrainian divers manage?

Russian military ships in that area have the technology to detect and destroy underwater explosives. This was one of the most difficult parts of the job. The explosives and the concrete jacket that held them had to be manufactured in a way that would not be noticed by Russian ships scanning the area, be adapted to the salinity of the sea water and appear to be a natural part of the seabed. Norwegian intelligence had to work hard in taking care of this complex issue. How did the Ukrainian divers manage?

– When things got complicated, Polish Prime Minister Tusk announced the third phase and showed the way out. Don’t talk anymore, abandon the file. Similar demands have been voiced by other circles as well in recent days. It will probably be as Mr Tusk suggests and the Scholz government will most likely ensure that the file is closed by some formula.

The story of Nord Stream gas lines is now at a stage where some tragicomic elements pop up.

The Prime Minister of an EU country suggests the biggest economic terrorism incident in Europe not to be talked about and to be covered up. Not much differing voices, not much reactions from EU leaders. What a pleasant place the EU has become!

Chancellor Scholz of Germany, the leading country of the EU, cannot produce a meaningful rebuttal to the humiliating comments coming from his eastern neighbor on an issue that directly concerns his country’s economic and strategic interests. Most likely he will act as suggested and keep on adopting as a master of the art. Otherwise, Big Brother may downgrade him into a more difficult situation.

Germany, France, Netherlands, Austria, Norway, Sweden and Denmark are direct parties to the sabotage. Some of them are partners in the company that owns the blown-up pipelines, or the sabotage occurred in the exclusive economic zone of some of them, etc. But the intelligence organizations of these countries cannot find any clear evidence as to who committed the major terrorist attack in the Baltic Sea – which has heavy maritime traffic. Swedes keep the findings secret instead of sharing them with the world.

Finally, the recent media news that portray Ukraine as the responsible party prove the previous news that painted Russia as the suspect were merely disinformation. The interesting thing is that the sources are largely the same in both cases.

Noam Chomsky’s words come to mind. “Any dictator would admire the uniformity and obedience of the U.S. media.”

One forgotten thing is that the truth has a habit of coming to light eventually. It will surely happen again.
